Market review from UTEX — week 37
Probability of a rate hike rises. Inflation data ahead.
Major US indices barely moved over the week: the SPY gained 0.11%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.35%. Top gainers included SanDisk (+17%), Dell (+14%), SK Hynix (+10%), Micron Technology (+9%), and Intel (+7%). The most notable declines came in Palo Alto Networks (-10%) and Palantir (-6%).
Friday's jobs report came in better than expected. Nonfarm payrolls jumped by 162,000, nearly triple the analyst forecast of 56,000. July's figure was also revised higher. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, while the labor force participation rate ticked up from 61.4% (a five‑year low) to 61.6%.
Strong jobs data is one factor favoring a rate hike. According to CME FedWatch, the probability of a 25‑basis‑point hike at the September 16 meeting is now 58.6%.
On Thursday, the Producer Price Index (PPI) for August will be released, followed by Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation on Friday.
There will be fewer earnings reports this week; the most interesting ones include Oracle, Adobe, Copart, Casey's General Stores, GameStop, SailPoint, AeroVironment, Macy's, RH, and Kroger.
Top trading ideas for this week
🔴 AeroVironment (AVAV). Reports September 9 after market close. The U.S. defense contractor develops and manufactures drones and robotic systems. The stock has fallen about 40% over the past year. The earnings report will show whether the company can turn strong demand for drones and defense technology into actual profits. Shares are trading near a strong support level around $135–140. If the level holds after earnings, the stock could be considered for a medium-term position.
🔴 GameStop (GME). Reports September 8 after market close. Anything can happen, given the stock’s meme status. GameStop is transforming into an investment holding company led by Ryan Cohen. Investors will be looking for clues about where management plans to deploy its substantial cash reserves. In May, GameStop attempted to acquire marketplace eBay for $55.5 billion, but the platform rejected the offer. GameStop now owns a roughly 10% stake in eBay worth nearly $5 billion, with its revaluation generating about $238 million in unrealized gains last quarter. The report should shed light on whether GameStop will continue pursuing a partnership with eBay or gradually increase its stake.
🔴 Oracle (ORCL). Reports September 10 after market close. With demand for AI computing remaining high, investors will be looking for faster growth in cloud infrastructure. The market will also be watching spending on data centers and equipment. Heavy AI investment has previously raised concerns about pressure on free cash flow and margins, making management’s comments on future spending particularly important. The stock is down 28% year to date and looks fairly attractive for a medium-term position, but it may be better to wait for the report and the company’s guidance.
🔴 Adobe (ADBE). Reports September 10 after market close. Shares fell 6.5% on Friday after the company announced a CEO transition. On December 1, Anil Chakravarthy, who currently leads the Digital Experience business, will take over as CEO. Investors are looking for a clear plan from the new chief executive to defend Adobe’s leadership in graphics and creative software. The company has announced changes to its monetization strategy and the introduction of a freemium model, lowering expectations for ARR (annual recurring revenue). Management has said the strategy is not expected to fully pay off until 2027.
🟡 Copart (CPRT). Reports September 10 after market close. The company operates online vehicle auctions and remarketing services. Shares traded at $63 in May 2025 before falling to $27 by July 2026. CPRT has gained 16% over the past month. On September 3, JPMorgan upgraded the stock from Neutral to Overweight and raised its price target from $32 to $40. The bank highlighted Copart’s service quality, extensive infrastructure, and relationships with insurers as key strengths despite intense competition. JPMorgan also believes the company has become more aggressive in pursuing market share. The current price looks attractive for a medium-term position, but major moves are unlikely, as the stock typically moves slowly. If the uptrend holds after earnings, the stock could be accumulated gradually.
